Contraceptive pills are the most common method among women to avoid unwanted pregnancies. But doctors claim that they have a direct impact on our liver functions. The liver processes all the food, drugs, alcohol, etc we consume and help in their metabolism and detoxification. However, doctors suggest that even herbal remedies like aloe vera, green tea, or self-medication with paracetamol should be taken with caution as they are the major reason behind Drug-Induced Liver Injury causing acute liver failure.

According to National Cancer Institute, oral pills are hormonal pills that are taken to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation and sperm penetration through the cervix. Dr. Uday Sanglodkar, Mumbai’s Global Hospital added that though contraceptive pills are a common method used by the majority of the female population, anything that we consume has to pass by our liver for metabolism and will directly impact them. He further elaborated that estrogen and oral contraceptive are associated with liver-related complications such as intrahepatic cholestasis, gallstone, peliosishepatis, hepatic adenoma, hepatic vein thrombosis, etc. Long-term usage of the pills can lead to liver cancers such as haemangiomas and adenomas which are normally benign but can turn cancerous on rare occasions.

Adding details to the explanation, Dr. Chetan Ramesh Kalal, Masina Hospital briefed that patients prone to or diagnosed with liver diseases should be cautious of taking pills as studies have shown that pills can lead to chronic liver damage and jaundice.
